Part Three: The Gospel of Jesus Christ Pt. 1
- Mark 1:1 “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;”
Jesus Christ is the Gospel; the Good News. Evangelists are preachers of the gospel. As seen in “Part 1: The Gospel to Sinners” and “Part 2: The Gospel to Saints” of the Evangelist’s Message, the gospel is for both the saved and the lost. Evangelists, therefore, are responsible for preaching about Jesus to both the lost and believers in Christ. Believers are even exhorted to grow in their knowledge of Jesus.
- “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” – II Peter 3:18
One might wonder if the evangelist is limited in his preaching since he only preaches the gospel. But if one considers the inexhaustible gospel truths concerning Jesus Christ, one would understand that the evangelist is far from limited in his preaching. Such an undertaking as preaching the complete gospel of Jesus Christ is humanly impossible. Jesus is Eternal. He is from eternity past to eternity future. Before time began, Jesus was the Creator (Colossians 1:16; Hebrews 1:2) and “the Word” with God the Father (John 1:1). Jesus is still the Sustainer of this universe (Hebrews 1:3) by Whom all things consist (Colossians 1:17) and “the Word” Who will conquer the enemies of this world (Revelation 19:13). Jesus was and is God (John 1:1), and yet, He is also God’s Son (Mark 1:1).
- In the Old Testament, Jesus was seen as:
- -the Angel of the Lord (Genesis 16, 22; Exodus 3)
- -the Branch (Zechariah 3:8, 6:12)
- -the Friend that sticketh closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24)
- -our Redeemer (Job 19:25)
- -the forthcoming Messiah (Daniel 9:25-26)
- -Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).
- In the New Testament, Jesus is:
- -Emmanuel (Matthew 1:23)
- -our Propitiation and Advocate (I John 2:1-2)
- -the Righteous Judge (II Timothy 4:8)
- -the Lamb (John 1:29, 36)
- -the Lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5)
- -our great High Priest (Hebrews 3:1, 4:14)
- -the Son of Man (Matthew 9:6, 12:8)
- -the Son of God (Matthew 14:33, 27:54)
- -the True Vine (John 15:1)
- -the Door (John 10:7, 9)
- -the Resurrection (John 11:25)
- -the Way, the Truth, the Life (John 14:6)
- -the Great Shepherd (Hebrews 13:20)
- -and the Chief Cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20).
- The names and descriptions could go on and on. Oh, how wonderful is Jesus our Lord! The Good News of Jesus, as seen from the four “Gospels” of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, would include Jesus’ life, His death, His burial, His resurrection, His ascension. But the gospel as presented to us from the first four books of the New Testament also includes:
- -Jesus’ actions (casting the money changers out of the temple twice [John 2:15; Matthew 21:12]; fastings [Matthew 4:2]; prayers [Luke 11:1], etc…)
- -Jesus’ miracles (healing the blind, lame, sick, dumb, deaf [Luke 7:22]; palsied, demon possessed [Matthew 4:24]; dead [John 11:43-44], etc…)
- -Jesus’ teachings (parables [Matthew 13:18, 24, 31, 33-34, etc…], Old Testament quotations [Matthew 4:4, 7, 10, etc…], rebukes [Matthew 8:26, 17:18; Mark 8:33])
- -Jesus’ feelings (his sighs and groans [Mark 8:12; John 11:33], his weeping over Lazarus and Jerusalem [John 11:35; Luke 19:41], his surprise over the centurion who had great faith [Matthew 8:10], etc…)
- -and Jesus’ treatment from others (rejected [Mt. 21:42; Mk. 8:31, 12:10; Lk. 7:30, 9:22, 17:25, 20:17]; betrayed [Matthew 10:4, 17:22, 20:18, 26:2, 24-25, 45, 48, etc…]; forsaken [Matthew 26:56]; spit upon [Matthew 26:67, 27:30; Mark 10:34, 14:65, 15:19]; adored [Mt. 21:9, Mk. 11:10, Lk. 19:38]; worshipped [Mt. 2:11, 8:2, 9:18, 14:33, 15:25, etc…]; trusted [Mt. 8:13, 21:32; Jn. 2:11, 23, 4:39, 41, etc…).
Wow, there is just so much to learn from our great Savior! Notice what John said:
- “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.”
- John said that the world itself could not contain all of what Jesus did. And that’s just what Jesus did during His short earthly ministry! But there is so, so, so much more to Who Jesus is, not to mention all that Jesus has done for us. Through Jesus, we have:
- -redemption (Romans 3:24)
- -justification (Romans 4:25; 5:16, 18)
- -forgiveness (Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14)
- -adoption (Galatians 4:5; Ephesians 1:5)
- -an eternal inheritance of God’s heavenly riches (Ephesians 1:8)
- -His grace (Ephesians 2:7)
- -and His throne (Romans 8:17; Revelation 22:5).
God had Mark say it correctly when he wrote in Mark 1:1, “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” The good news of Jesus is not complete even yet. There is still the consummation of His Kingship when “every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10-11) Praise the Lord, truly these revelations of Jesus are good news, and an eternity’s worth of valuable gospel that the evangelist is responsible to preach!
