Right in the Eyes of the Lord
In “A Man After God’s Own Heart,” we noticed David’s complete obedience to God’s law. The last verse in that article is:
- I Kings 15:5 “Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.”
In this article, I want you to notice the phrase “David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord.” Since the verse states that David “turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life”, then David doing “that which was right in the eyes of the Lord” correlates with David obeying God completely and not turning “aside from any thing.” This correlation is not the first time it is mentioned either.
- Deuteronomy 13:18 “When thou shalt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD thy God.”
Again we see that obeying “all his commandments” which God commands us is likewise doing “that which is right in the eyes of the Lord thy God.”
Before his proud downfall, King Asa, whom we learn about in “God’s Longing and Searching”, had similarities to David.
- I Kings 15:11 “And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did David his father.”
The phrase is repeated two more times about King Asa:
- I Kings 22:43 “And he walked in all the ways of Asa his father; he turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of the LORD: nevertheless the high places were not taken away; for the people offered and burnt incense yet in the high places.”
- II Chronicles 14:2 “And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:”
Let’s draw this together. In “Right in Your Own Eyes” we saw how most believers are living according to their own way, not God’s Word. In this article, we see the need to live according to that which is right in the eyes of the Lord. So, each and every decision comes with these two options: right in your own eyes or right in the eyes of the Lord. At the day of judgment and reward, only that which is right in the eyes of the Lord will last. Make the right choice.
