Divorce: Not Acceptable

Malachi 2:16 “For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.”

I do not like legumes, especially black-eyed peas. Their very smell is a stench to my nostrils! And yet, so many times my family and friends have tried convincing me to eat them. 🙂

My strong dislike for peas, however, is nothing compared to the “hate” God has for “putting away” which in modern terms we call “divorce”. And yet, how many of God’s people have tried convincing God to accept their terms for divorce! God says “He hates”; man says “But wait!” Man comes up with a myriad of “good” reasons for divorce. God’s Word still says, “he hateth putting away.” “But Preacher So-and-so says….” That may be true, but God says, “he hateth putting away.” Your closest family and friends may accept divorce and may strongly pressure you to do the same, but God’s Word still says, “he hateth putting away.” God is the Rock of Gibraltar that never moves.

To us, “hate” may not seem like a big deal. Man uses “hate” regularly to refer even to the smallest of things in life. “I hate that dress.” “I hate black-eyed peas!” God, though, does not lightly use the word “hate.” If God says he hates divorce, God is using one of the strongest words in the English language to convey the way He feels. God does not accept divorce. God despises divorce. God loves those who’ve had divorce, but God does not love the practice of divorce. Never be unkind, but like your God, never accept divorce as an option.
