Least Commandments

  • Matthew 5:19 “Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”

Every believer must live according to all of God’s Word. However, we are tempted to categorize some of God’s Word, particularly what we deem “least commandments,” as non-essential. Usually, whatever each believer views as “non-essential” or the “least commandments” is not obeyed and followed. Yet, Jesus revealed that whoever breaks even “one of these least commandments” shall be called “least in the kingdom of heaven.” And those who teach there are “least commandments” that are not needed for holy living and obedience, similarly “shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven.” “But whosoever shall do and teach” the “least commandments” “the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” God makes it very, very plain throughout His Word that He wants ALL of His Word obeyed. No matter whether you view some practices in Christianity as essential/ non-essential or important/non-important does not matter. You and I must live and teach others to live according to all of God’s Word.
