Control Your Emotions - Part Two

In Control Your Emotions – Part One,” I explained my emotional issues as a teenager, my victory over those through Christ’s enabling grace, my destructive illness in 2011 that caused permanent brain and nerve damage, and God’s continued grace empowering victory over my extreme pain and imbalanced emotions to this day. The medical community knows that I should be struggling with these issues. It has been regularly brought up by many, various doctors and physicians through the years. After my initial recovery in 2012, I was even expected to see a psychiatrist over these issues. After two visits, the psychiatrist marked me down as completely capable of dealing with my emotional issues despite years of abuse as a child and present permanent brain damage. How could this be? I had lengthy talks with the psychiatrist about my Savior Jesus Christ. The psychiatrist quickly learned just how strong Jesus is allowed to be in my life. Jesus’ grace is (not will be) sufficient for me, I accept that by faith, and continually address each day’s issues through the power of the Holy Spirit! Mind you, I deal not only with my debilitation and disabilities, my terrorizing emotions, my excruciating pain, but also the same issues of life you do on top of the extra attacks that come with being a leader in the ministry of Christ. I have bills like you. I have a ton of attacks and character assassinations from family, friends, and foes. I have pressing sometimes overwhelming work, too, just like you. Yet, Christ gives victory over my emotions. How?

With preliminaries out of the way in Part One, let’s dive right into how to control any and all of your emotions no matter what mental or health struggles you have. Remember that the author has permanent brain and nerve damage, and deals with these issues permanently, daily. Yet, sadly, most ignore God’s miraculous working in my life instead of learning how to apply that same miraculous grace in their own lives. Remember also that God’s precepts apply to all; no one is exempt; all are expected to obey God’s commands.

  • #1 – “Submit” and “Let”
  •
  • James 4:7 “Submit yourselves therefore to God.”
  •
  • Our first issue concerns submission. Most will excuse their emotions, not submit those emotions to God to control. The key is in what or Whom you allow. You can allow yourself to submit to your immediate rush of emotions, or you can let God have first say, all say, and all power over your emotions.
  •
  • Colossians 3:15 “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts”
  • Philippians 2:5 “ Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:”
  •
  • Christ’s grace, power, wisdom, life, etc… flows only in and through the believer that “lets” Him. If you are saved, “Christ liveth” (Gal. 2:20) in you, but you can “frustrate”/neutralize Christ’s grace (Gal. 2:21) if you stop the flow. Christ will not strong-arm His children. The Holy Spirit is a gentleman. It is up to you to “submit” and to “let” Christ’s power flow and Christ’s light to radiate and Christ’s life to live in, through, and from you.
  •
  • #2 – James 4:7 “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
  •
  • Every moment we are in spiritual warfare (Eph. 6:12). There are only two sides: you can “resist the Holy Ghost” (Acts 7:51) or you can “resist the devil”. When you resist an emotional ambush or rush of negative emotions and submit to what is right even though it doesn’t feel right, the negative will eventually be replaced with God’s righteous peace.
  •
  • Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
  • vs. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.”
  •
  • Remember again, though, you must “let the peace of God rule in your hearts.”
  •
  • #3 – Psalm 37:5 “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”
  • Proverbs 16:3 “Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.”
  •
  • What you “trust” comes “to pass.” If you believe that you can’t control your feelings, you won’t control your feelings and you will expect all around you to have to put up with your outbursts. Mind you, selfishly you expect those around you to do what you yourself won’t do: they must control their reactions to your emotions when you won’t.
  •
  • Since “faith is the victory” (I Jn. 5:4), you must always “trust also in him” in order to access Christ’s grace and power. When you truly “commit thy way unto the Lord” and “commit thy works unto the Lord”, “thy thoughts shall be established” and God “shall bring it to pass.” This applies to outbursts of emotion also. God can control anger, outbursts of tears, excessive laughter, depression, stress, worries, etc…. And yes, even if you have health issues like me, God claims full victory for you, too. Faith and commitment is the key. Do you believe “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Phil. 4:13)? Are you fully committed to Christ’s control?
  •

So, what do I do with my emotions? Despite it being deemed impossible medically, I “submit” to my all-possible God (Mt. 17:20, 19:26; Mk. 10:27; Lk. 1:37, 18:27), “let” Christ fill His power in me, “resist” the negative and/or outbursts of emotion, “trust” in Christ for victory, and commit it all to the Lord for safe keeping. Time and time and time and time again since 2009 and even more after 2011’s permanent damage, God’s grace is sufficient for me.

  • (Meditate and memorize this passage:)
  • II Cor. 12:7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
  • 8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
  • 9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
  • 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”
  •

Dear reader, how is it that God’s children can trust doctors and medicine to control their emotions, but not the Balm of Gilead, the Great Physician, the Savior of the world Who promises unstoppable grace, power, and peace, and Who daily proves it?
